From 1 April to 9 June, Curiosi di Natura propose “Pleasures of the Carso – Spring 2024”: six walks to experience the nature, culture and gastronomy of well-known and less well-known localities of the Carso around Trieste, Gorizia and Slovenia.

As you take in the spectacular seascapes, woods and cultivated areas, the local environment and ecology are illustrated by our Curiosi di Natura guides, together with live readings (in Italian) of poetry, literature, history and culture.

Initiative within the "Springtime Gentle Mobility" project promoted by Alleanza per la Mobilità Dolce (A.Mo.Do.) with the main Italian associations involved in gentle mobility.

The excursions are all slow-paced, along mainly flat paths, and are suitable for persons of all ages and fitness levels, in normal physical condition.

Also, every day, from April 1 until June 16, participants will be able to taste typical dishes at local restaurants at a discounted price. On signing up for the excursion, in fact, each participant will receive a 10% discount coupon valid for two persons at the “Sapori del Carso” restaurants.

EASTER MONDAY 1 APRIL “From Sgonico to the Bear Cave” (canceled for bad weather) A hike amidst striking karstic phenomena as far as Grotta dell’Orso (Bear Cave). With its imposing entry vault, this cave contained the remains of cave bears and Neolithic settlements. With themed readings.
Meeting venue: 9.10 am, Sgonico Town Hall. Buses n. 42 and 46 from Trieste.

SUNDAY 14 APRIL “From Devetachi to Miren” (Slo) From the Vallone in the Gorizia Carso, through the woods across the border as far as the Miren hill, dominated by the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows. Extensive views of Gorizia, the Vipava Valley and the mountains.
Meeting venue: 9.10 am, in the open space in front of the trattoria at Devetachi, State road n. 55/Strada del Vallone (Doberdò del Lago).

SUNDAY 5 MAY “From Visogliano to Mount Sambuco” An easy walk across woods, farmlands, karst grasslands and the village of Malchina up to Mount Sambuco. Panoramic views over the border into Slovenia.
Meeting venue: 9.10 am, Sistiana-Visogliano train station. Bus n. 44 from Trieste.

SUNDAY 12 MAY “To Volcji Grad” (Komen, Slo) Accompanied by the expert Goran Zivec, a tour of Debela Griza, one of the largest and most fascinating prehistoric hillforts of the Karst.
Meeting venue: 9.10 am, Provincial road n. 6 (from Gabrovizza going towards Komen), at the junction for Ternova. Transfer to Volcji Grad with own transport. GPS: 45°45'52.0"N 13°42'01.5"E

SUNDAY 19 MAY “From Basovizza to Grozzana” A hike along the slopes of Mount Cocusso, amidst the flowers of the karst grasslands, to the village of Grozzana, situated in a fertile valley. Themed readings.
Meeting venue: 9.10 am, parking lot of the Basovizza Astronomical Observatory. Bus n. 51 from Trieste.

SUNDAY 9 JUNE “The lavender fields of Povir” (Sezana) Through shady woods, spectacular dolinas and mountain views, up to the village of Povir. A visit to the farm that grows lavender and medicinal herbs, with themed tastings.
Meeting venue (8.45 am): parking lot at the former border crossing for Lipica; then, car share to the start of the trail.
